Basic Training

Jack Russell Terriers enjoy learning tricks and becoming an active part of your family. Again in order to do that, you need to establish yourself as the leader of the pack. In each dog clan or pack there is a leader and a Jack Russell will gladly take your place as leader if you do not establish yourself as the leader of the band. You can evaluate how submissive your terrier is willing to be and it will be a great help in establishing a training routine.

A submissive dog will:

    1. Avoid eye contact.

    2. Be comfortable on its back in your arms.

    3. Rolls on its back.

    4. Crouch down, ears back and tail lowered.

A dominant dog:

    1. Will make or maintain eye contact.

    2. Ears and tail up, hair raised on back.

    3. Unwilling to move from his place on the couch.

    4. Dislikes petting and grooming.

    5. Possessive of toys and dishes.

Be in Charge:

    1. By regular training times on the leash.

    2. Spending time grooming your dog.

    3. Rolling the dog on his back and stroke the belly and toes.

    4. Try hand feeding some food and make them take treats slowly and gently while sitting.

In asserting dominance always be consistent, gentle and firm.
You and your Jack Russell will get along just fine with you in the lead.
